WhatFlow is getting merchants' WhatsApp numbers permanently banned.
Here's what's actually happening.
If you're using WhatFlow and wondering whether your WhatsApp number is at risk — it is. This is not a scare tactic. It is a structural problem with how WhatFlow works, and it has cost multiple merchants their primary business number.
How WhatFlow works — and why Meta bans it
WhatFlow's original product (apps.shopify.com/whatflow, 346 reviews) uses a method called "Link a Device." Instead of connecting to Meta's official WhatsApp Business API, it connects to your existing WhatsApp account as if it were a second device — like how WhatsApp Web works.
Meta explicitly prohibits this for automated business messaging. Their Terms of Service state that automated tools operating outside the official API are in violation. When Meta's systems detect automation patterns on a linked device — message volumes, timing signatures, template repetition — they flag and eventually restrict the account.
The insidious part: it works fine for months, then one morning the number is banned with no warning. There is no appeal process for violations of this type. The number is gone.
"Got our WhatsApp Business account restricted by Meta after a few months of use. We lost the number we had been using with our customers for 2 years. This app should come with a serious warning."
"WhatsApp Business account banned twice for using an unauthorized API. Do not use this app if you rely on WhatsApp for customer communication at all. We lost everything."
"Everything worked perfectly for 6 months. Then Meta flagged us and we lost access to our business number overnight. We had 1,200 active customer conversations on that number."
WhatFlow launched a second app (apps.shopify.com/whatflow-official-api) using the official Meta API in response to these complaints. It has 18 reviews — too early to evaluate reliability. It also adds Meta's per-message conversation fees on top of the subscription, which WhatFlow's original product did not. The original "Link a Device" product is still live and still being installed.
